a windmill I unexpectedly stumbled across during a hike in South Denver last year....
_____
Tomorrow a little something different, but there are only three more installments of my 100 favorite movies... we've reached the top 30... let's get to it...
30. > Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Matthew Broderick, Mia Sara)
Snooty Maitre D': You're Abe Froman?
Ferris: That's right.
Snooty Maitre D': The sausage king of Chicago?
Ferris: Yep. That's me.
I to this day can't believe there wasn't a sequel... what, Ferris in college wouldn't have been the logical followup here?
Hell, do one now! Ferris as a 40something executive somewhere.... it would be a license to print money... let's get this done Hollywood...

29. > We are Marshall (Matthew McConaghey, Matthew Fox)
Jack Lengyel: When I heard about what had happened, your situation, the only thing I could think about was the four of them. I thought about how much they mean to me, about how bad it would hurt if... well if I was to lose them. Then I thought about a team, and a school, and a town thats gotta be hurtin' real bad. And I thought, hell, maybe I could help.
Easily the lowest rated film by critics in my top 30... and I just don't understand it... I've seen it twice now over the past 2 months and I think it's just about as good as a sports movie can get... perfect casting, directed and edited flawlessly... it's based on the horrible true story about the plane crash and its aftermath... and I cry even during the end credits... every button I have as a filmgoer it pushes and then some... a shout out to the composer Christophe Beck who completely kicked ass in every way with his score... Hell, I might move this one up in future lists... it's that good. And if you don't think so, well, you are free to have your own top 100 list... but as this one's mine.... it makes the top 30 easily...

Daniel: You're the best friend I've ever had.
Miyagi: You pretty okay too...

27. > Pulp Fiction (John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson)
Jules: Looks like me and Vincent caught you at breakfast, sorry about that. What'cha eatin'?
Brett: Hamburgers.
Jules: Hamburgers! The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast...
...still pisses me off that we never find out what the hell is in that briefcase.... "That's a Tasty Burger!" cracks me up every time...

26. > Cast Away (Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt)
Chuck Noland: Gotta love crab. In the nick of time too. I couldn't take much more of those coconuts. Coconut milk is a natural laxative. That's something Gilligan never told us...
How the hell can there not be deleted scenes on the DVD here? I know the director, Robert Zemeckis, doesn't believe in them or some reason... but I hate the fact that we never see what happens after the boat finds Hanks floating in the ocean, his reaction to being found... etc...
anyway, it's pretty great besides that...

25. > Braveheart (Mel Gibson)
William Wallace: There's a difference between us. You think the people of this country exist to provide you with position. I think your position exists to provide those people with freedom. And I go to make sure that they have it.
...my dad was born in Scotland... there was no way this one wasn't making top 25....

24. > The Wizard of Oz (Judy Garland)
Dorothy: Don't be silly, Toto. Scarecrows don't talk.
...since there really isn't much to say about this classic, I'll just add that for the last 3 minutes I couldn't remember who played Dorothy. Honest, I had to eventually look it up. I'm a little angry about that I don't mind telling you...

23. > Broadcast News (William Hurt, Holly Hunter)
Tom: What do you do when your real life exceeds your dreams?
Aaron: Keep it to yourself...
a little dated, but still brilliantly written... Albert Brooks is fabulous as the bitter reporter... I've seen it 5,723 times....

Rotten Tomatoes: 96
Metacritic: 84
22. > A Few Good Men (Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson)
Lt. Weinberg: Cmdr. Galloway, Lt. Kaffee is considered to be the best litigator in our office. He successfully plea bargained 44 cases in 9 months.
Kaffee: One more and I get a set of steak knives.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I still to this day can't believe that the studio didn't have Cruise and Demi Moore hook up in this film... how did they resist that urge? Mindboggling....

21. > Raiders of the Lost Ark (& Crusade) (Harrison Ford, Sean Connery)
Marion: You're not the man I knew ten years ago.
Indiana: It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.
really looking forward to the fourth installment this summer... Sean Connery is only 12 years older than Ford in real life... makes the whole "playing his dad" a little weird... but what an enjoyable series of films...

From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you've got in your body, lay it on the line until the final whistle blows. And if you do that, if you do that, we cannot lose. We may be behind on the scoreboard at the end of the game but if you play like that we cannot be defeated. This is your opportunity to rise from these ashes and grab glory...
